COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - One of the University of South Carolina football team's doctors missed Thursday's workout because he's on his way to China.
He and another USC doctor are part of a prestigious group of surgeons who will share their knowledge of sports medicine. They say it is an honor for the doctors and for the Gamecock program.
Dr. Jeff Guy spends a lot of time looking at X-rays of knees as one of the team surgeons for the University of South Carolina athletics program. When a Gamecock gets hurt and needs to get fixed, he is normally the guy who does it.
He is also one of the leading names in orthopedics in the country, which is why he is spending the next 12 days in China.
"Sports medicine in China hasn't developed as much in China as it has here in the U.S.," he said. "They don't have as much training to develop that sub specialty in orthopedics."
Dr. Guy is part of a group of doctors who will travel to China to share technics and see patients. His partner at the University of South Carolina, Dr. Chris Mazoue, will join the effort in April.
This is not guy's first trip to China. He was part of the medical team for Team USA during the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
"Being able to be exposed to that level of athletes was great," Guy said. "The whole medical system there was tremendous. It was nice being part of that large system."
It is also great for the university, which gets exposure for its medical team.
"The university has been spectacular and it's part of our mission to teach here at the medical school," said Guy. "[Athletic Director] Eric Hyman, [Head Coach' Steve Spurrier have been very active and they are supportive of doctors being a part of the system."
Guy says he will be in touch with the athletics program while in China, offering his expertise to those at home while he teaches his craft miles away.
