USC School of Medicine hosts S.M.A.R.T physicals on Saturday, April 27

March 27, 2013

The University of South Carolina School of Medicine’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine will host its 12th annual S.M.A.R.T. (Sports Medicine for Athletes and Recreational Teams) physicals from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27. The physicals will take place at the Palmetto Health-USC Family Medicine Center located at 3209 Colonial Drive in Columbia.

The physical exams are free to student athletes from S.M.A.R.T.-affiliated schools.

Physicians, athletic trainers, nurses and volunteers from the USC Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, Family and Preventive Medicine, Pediatrics and Internal Medicine will be participating in the event. Additional health-related information will be provided to middle and high school coaches, athletes and parents through a partnership between the School of Medicine and the Athletic Training Education Program at USC.

Student-athletes from more than 25 high schools, prep schools and middle schools in Richland, Lexington, Orangeburg and Newberry counties will be in attendance. Some of the high schools included are Airport, Ben Lippen, Chapin, C.A. Johnson Prep, Calhoun Academy, Calhoun County, Columbia, Eau Claire, Edisto, Healthwood Hall, Irmo, Keenan, Lower Richland, Mid-Carolina, Newberry, Northside Christian Academy, Orangeburg-Wilkinson, Orangeburg Prep, Swansea and Whitmire. Middle schools included are Alcorn, Crayton, Gibbes, Hand, Hopkins, Sanders, Southeast, St. Andrews and W.A. Perry.

Each school’s athletes will be assigned a time to arrive for their physicals. Contact the school’s athletic director or visit for the assigned time.

The S.M.A.R.T. program was developed in 2001 by Jeffrey Guy, M.D., assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at the USC School of Medicine and medical director for USC’s Department of Athletics. The program was established to increase the level of medical care available to South Carolina’s secondary school athletes, especially those involved in high-risk contact sports.
